The Deming Veteran’s Gathering

13 November 2010

This was Don Cameron’s 14th Gathering and it surpassed all the previous Gatherings for the number of riders who made the trip to the Cameron’s Palatial Estates in Deming, New Mexico.  More that 180 signed up, a crowd of riders for sure, but due to some bad weather “only” a record breaking total of 146 folks were on hand to swap tales and tell …well…some exaggerated tales.

Weather in November can be a real challenge with snow in the highlands, rain in the low lands and bitter cold everywhere.  This year the weather was just about perfect, cool mornings (maybe cold would be a better description) with lots of sunshine and temps in the 60s and 70s in the afternoon.  Nice…

Don’s barbequed meat is almost as good as Mary Lou’s brownies.  Both are so good you tend to over eat just a little bit, and then just a little bit more.  Thanks go out to Darryl Richmond for his all night vigil to make sure the temperature in the cookers stayed at just the right level.

No event can be successful without the help of some really good folks.  This year’s helpers and cooks were:  Steve & Julie Woodward for helping out at the Sign in Desk, Darryl Richmond for help in the kitchen, Bob Straubinger for help everywhere, Carol Larson for help at the sign in desk, Steve & Becky Aiken for help with the Redneck Horseshoes, Big Walo Meyer for bringing the bread we ate on all weekend, Rolf Gabbe for helping everywhere, and Deryle & Wanda Mehrten for putting together the sign in desk, door prizes, Redneck Horseshoes and all around helpers.

Door prices are always fun.  This year the prize donators were:  Alamogordo Cycle Center, Alamogordo, NM; Iron Horse Motorcycles, Tucson, AZ; San Diego BMW, San Diego, CA; Land of Enchantment (LOE) BMW Club; South East Arizona Touring Riders (SEAT) Club; Russ Locke; and Heidi Still - Door Prize Queen (Heidi collects prizes all year round and this year brought 33 prizes)!  Next time you shop at or see one of these gracious folks be sure to thank them for their support.

Here are the big winners:  Mark Kratz - won the Nolan helmet donated by BMW San Diego, San Diego, CA.; Michael McNally - won the First Gear Jacket donated by Iron Horse Motorcycles, Tucson, AZ.; Wilson Moore - won the HJC SyMax II helmet donated by Alamogordo Cycle Center, Alamogordo, NM.; Lance Richardson - won 50/50 $415.00 (The other half is donated to the Veterans transportation fund.)  The Redneck Horseshoe winners:  1st place - Larry Blackwell , a fifth of Jack Daniels, and 2nd place - Heidi Still a pint of Jack Daniels.

Thanks to all the folks who came, it ain’t a party without you, and to all the folks who helped with the clean up Saturday night, most appreciated.  Be sure to mark your next year’s calendar for the 15th Annual Deming Veterans Gathering scheduled for the 12th of November 2011.  See you there!
