Alpine California Overnighter

April 2014

We left on Thursday for the long haul on I8 to Alpine California. We had a group of about 10 of us. We arrived at the Ayres in Alpine. It was a nice hotel and they gave us downstairs rooms where we could park our bikes right out our front doors. We had dinner the first night at a mexican place. 20 people attended.

Friday Curtis led us on a 200 mile ride north on all the best twisty roads. We went to Julian, Borrego Springs, Mt. Palomar and had lunch in Temecula. Then back to the hotel on more twisty roads.

Some of us ate that night at the home of Half's aunt and uncle, Ed and Carol. Great food and great hospitality.

Saturday morning it was cold and wet. Craig led us down the freeway east for 46 miles to the east end of old US80. Temperatures were down in the mid 30s. It felt good to get off and get a coffee in a market in Jacumba. We then followed CA94 toward San Diego, turning south through Chula Vista and to the pier at Imperial Beach for lunch. Then up the strand to Coronado for coffee. We went over the high Coronado bridge and back to Alpine to soak in the hot tub. Susan's idea. It felt great. That night we had Greek food in a fast food place.

Sunday it was another 6 ours on the freeway back to Tucson. Deryle and Wanda never made it as the dust storm in west of Yuma blew them back into Arizona. We give them credit for a valiant try. Click here to read their story.

Attending was Skip Blecker, Steve Cantrill, Dave Cooley, Dave Delie, Ron Foltz, Curtis Hill, Craig Littlefield, Menachem Lorber, Deryle & Wanda Merhten, Doug (Half) Neill & Jennifer, Jon Nicolusi, Susan O'Brien, Darryl Richman, Frank Ruffin, John Sibbett, David Swain and Steve Woodard.
