Yuma Landing - February Discover Arizona 2011 Ride
Although Saturday started out a bit cool, it was still nice weather for riding. Didnít last long. At Marana as we were gassing up, Mother Nature started blowing parts of Arizona away. It was a windy, dusty, rainy, and then sunny day. Stopping in Gila Bend for lunch, we watched the weather front heading east...good thing we were heading west. About 15 minutes heading east down I-8 the rain stopped and the sun peeked out from behind the clouds. It was nice weather the rest of the weekend.
Wanda and I rode over to Yuma with Tish and Eddie Mealy, staying on the interstate all the way. We both had rooms reserved at the Coronado Best Western. Itís a nice place to stay, clean rooms and within a few minutes from the Yuma Landing Bar and Grill. We walked over to the Landing just about 5 pm, hoping we would see another SEAT member or two. Nope, only us.
Just as we were finishing dinner, in walked Deb and Gary Blomstrom. What a surprise! Like us, they rode through some serious wind and rain to get to Yuma, and were just as happy to see us as we were to see them. We all earned our dinner and libations that night. Great company.
Sunday morning was again a bit cool as we headed out. Our plans had changed from riding about 350 miles that day to less than half that. Our first stop was for Date Shakes at the Dateland exit at their totally new building and gift shop. Unfortunately The Place, the Home of the A**hole Club, about a mile north of Dateland, was closed. Too bad, next time.
We spent Sunday night in Ajo at the Marine Hotel, enjoying a Margarita at the Bowling Alley and Chinese food at the Bamboo Village, both a short walk from the hotel. The next day it was off to Kaka and into Tucson via the Ajo Highway. The weather was just beautiful all the way. Even with Saturdayís bad weather, it was a great ride.
Next month itís the London Bridge Crossing Ride. We have our fingers crossed the weather will be a bit more cooperative. Weíll see. Ride safe!
