Oregon Coast - Mike Hoppe’s Off Road Adventures
by Mike Hoppe
Two days and 700 miles of mountain twisties...900 miles total. I just got to the Oregon coast at Waldport after leaving Lee's in Montana yesterday morning. What an awesome ride!!
The first 180 miles after leaving Lee's cabin were a great warm up for the day, riding from Flathead Lake down to Wallace Idaho where the trail system begins. Candy and I had mountain biked a section of the converted rails about 5 years ago...including tunnels and trestles...this ride would cover a lot more ground and dump me out 70 miles later at Clarkia, Washington. Awesome dirt almost 100% running next to streams and rivers!
The ride south to Hell's Canyon NP was some of the most demanding switchbacks (paved) I've ever ridden...and literally for hundreds of miles...5 hours worth...by the time I got to Halfway, Oregon I was ready to get off...12 hours in the saddle at full concentration between the dirt and the twisties!
The ride to the coast was more of the same, crossing 3 mountain ranges and 500 miles. Multiple sections of posted 15mph switchbacks for miles at a time! The last two days have been like an endless loop of 191 in AZ...except different scenery!
I'm sitting at a dive seafood restaurant in Waldport (just walked out and took the picture waiting for my next round of fish!) that I found 2 years ago...they have WiFi...and it is all you can eat FRESH fish and chips night...overlooking the beach...1.5 miles up from my campground!!! Too cool!!
Off in the am for Harris Beach State park outside of Brookings OR on the coast just above the California state line...I'll be there until Sunday…[to be continued!]
