Mount Lemmon on New Years Day 2011

By Craig Littlefield

Every New Years Day morning a group meets at the MacDonald's on Catalina Highway and Tanque Verde to ride up the mountain. We always stop at Windy Point and depending on the weather might go to the top of the road. This year it was very cold. It was 26 at the bottom and as low as 20 degrees going up the mountain. It had been closed the day before and they opened it up at 7:20 in the morning just in time for our 9am assent. There were a few patches of ice but they could be avoided. It was beautiful at Windy Point. The road was closed this year above that point. Six brave souls made the trip.
