City New Mexico & The Trail of the Mountain Spirits.
By David Danks
Silver City is about 150 miles away. 100 miles to Lordsburg then 50 miles due
north. I have done this ride twice with the scooter club. Two nights 3 days.
First day settle in at the hotel. Second day ride the Trail of the Mountain
Spirits and head home on the 3rd day.
We stayed at the Palace Hotel downtown which goes back to the 1800s.Not
luxurious but adequate and charming. There is a good restraunt & bar across the
street from the hotel and a terrific Mexican restraunt a block down the street.
The Trail of the Mountain Spirits is a designated federal scenic byway.A 93 mile
loop which climbs up into the Gila National Forest and crosses the Continental
Divide twice and the Gila River. The route goes through the Mimbres Valley ranch
country and up into the forest. Lake Roberts is along the byway.
There are spectacular overlooks of the Gila Wilderness 2000 feet below. There
are lots of twisties and stretches make Mt lemon look like a super highway. Some
sections have no center line stripe or guardrails. At one end of the loop is the
historic town of Pinos Altos. If time permits one can take a 15 mile side trip
and visit the Gila cliff dwellings.
This would make a great SEAT ride.
