A Four State Trip in 7 Days

by Martin Coll

††††† Brian and I decided it was time for a ride, so we did a four state trip in seven days (31 August to 6 September).† Brian works in parts at Cochise Motorsports.† A good guy and knows a lot about riding.† He was a motorbike traffic cop for 15 yrs, then was a test rider for Harley Davidson.† He also use to race motorcross.† He would make me look silly going round some of those tight bends in Colorado on his Triumph Tiger, what a great bike.† I was on my K1200RS, which is just a little bit harder to handle in the tight stuff.

†††† Day 1 - 31 August:† We left from the Bisbee Breakfast Club (BBC) in Bisbee.† Pat and Heather gave us some comp coffee and a muffin to push us on our way to Silver City then back roads to Socorro, missing some major storms.† Then the last 22 miles to Santa Fe we got hammered, soaked through but we were smiling.

†††† Day 2 - 1 September: We rode from Santa Fe on back roads over to Taos then over the Rio Grande into Colorado and a nightís stop at Pagosa Springs where we enjoyed a local bar for too many pints of Guiness.

†††† Day 3 & 4 - 2 & 3 September:† From Pagosa Springs we rode over Wolf Creek Pass.† I had tears in my eyes looking at the views.† Then through Creede and Lake City to Montrose for lunch.† Then off to Ridgway into Ouray, the best little town in Colorado.† So much so we spent 2 nights there. Met up with four Harley riders in the morning and rode with them over the million dollar highway to Silverton, then onto Durango for a nice breakfast paid for by Brian for all six of us, what a guy. We said our goodbyes to the Harley boys from Ohio, then set off through Dolores to Telluride.† I saw my first Bald Eagle in the river on a log.† We got into Telluride but did not stay to long, much to upper class for me after I saw the second Porche.† It was time to go back over to our home for the 2nd night in Ouray via Ralf Lorenz ranch and Ridgway.

†††† Day 5 - 4 September:† Big ride today, left Ouray back to Ridgway, Norwood, La Sal, Moab, Hwy 70 west to Utah, left on 24 to Hanksville, then on 12 to Boulder, Escalante, Tropic and to onto 89 at Bryce National Park.† When we left for Kanab Brianís bike broke down.† We sent for help in Kanab.† We spent the night in Johnson Canyon and got a new battery in the morning.

†††† Day 6 - 5 September:† We rode from Kanab past Jacob Lake to Lees Ferry and up to the junction.† The Tiger was out for good this time.† I gave Brian a ride on the back of the BMW to Page and help arrived 2 hrs later.† It was time to say goodbye to Brian as he was on the way back to Kanab and got picked up by his uncle from Vegas.† I hit the road in the dark to Flagg for the night.

†††† Day 7 - 6 September:† I rode home via Lake Mary Road, Strawberry, Globe, Tucson, Sonoita, Sierra Vista and the last 10 miles to Hereford.† I just had to lay on the garage floor for a 10 minute power nap.† My brake warning light was flashing all the way from Flagstaff.† I topped off my rear reservoir and found I had a leak in the front brake line, lucky guy!

†††† So that was a real quick view of our trip, Fantastic. (PS I did stop in at Performance bikes and have a wee look at the triumph Tiger 1050, its got me thinking.)† Cheers - Martin.† More pics at:
